City watering rules shape the system

From May 1 through October 31, the City of Santa Fe bans outdoor watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Overspray and runoff aren't allowed, and trees and shrubs can't be watered with overhead spray. We set controllers for early-morning and evening run times, move trees and shrubs onto drip zones, and fix heads that throw water onto sidewalks and driveways.

Caliche and clay soak in slowly

Much of Santa Fe sits on caliche and tight clay that sheds water when it comes down too fast. Shorter repeat cycles (cycle-and-soak), pressure-regulated drip and properly spaced emitters get water to the roots instead of into the gutter.

Monsoon storms bring sudden runoff

July through September storms can drop a lot of rain in minutes. French drains, swales, and gutters feeding rain barrels or cisterns move that water away from foundations and put it to use in the garden.

Questions

Santa Fe FAQ

What are the outdoor watering hours in Santa Fe?

Under the City of Santa Fe's seasonal rules, outdoor watering isn't allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 1 through October 31. Overspray and runoff are also prohibited. We program controllers to run inside the allowed hours.

Can I water trees and shrubs with sprinklers in Santa Fe?

No. City rules prohibit overhead spray irrigation for trees and shrubs. We convert those areas to drip, which also puts more of the water where the roots are.

When should I blow out my sprinklers in Santa Fe?

Most systems are blown out in October, before overnight hard freezes can crack pipes, valves and backflow devices. Book early, because fall schedules fill up fast.

Do you install rainwater catchment in Santa Fe?

Yes. We install rain barrels and larger cisterns and can connect them to drip lines for gardens and trees.
